California Dems have been on the fence for a while. They’ve got a good taste of what it’s like to have ignorant Dems all around them – from Nancy Pelosi as their Representative to Gavin Newsom as their governor. Now, with Biden supporting one of the worst pieces of legislation to come out of California in years, many are vowing not to vote Democrat in the upcoming election.
What has the Dems ready to jump ship?
In 2019, California passed Assembly Bill 5, commonly known as AB5 or the “gig worker bill.” It was signed into law by Newsom, requiring companies that hire independent contractors to classify them as employees. While it can offer benefits to some gig workers, it can also take away a number of their freedoms.
California is where there are more gig workers – freelancers, Uber drivers, and more. They’re attracted to the type of work because of the flexibility that the lifestyle offers.
AB5 is unpopular with gig workers and employers alike. It’s a vague law, too, so it doesn’t offer the kind of protection it was meant to. The gig workers don’t like it because they get their freedoms stripped. Employers don’t like it because it’s cost-prohibitive to turn contractors into employees.
There has been a significant amount of opposition to AB5 because of the restrictions imposed on freelancers. The author of the bill, Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, created exemptions in an effort to soften the blow, though it only made problems worse.
Some individuals were exempt from the three-part test to determine if a freelancer would be classified as an employer. This included graphic designers, fine artists, and marketers. However, photojournalists and journalists were excluded. The latter can only submit 35 or fewer submissions to a particular publisher a year or they lose their ability to freelance. The small number has many furious because it’s such an arbitrary number.
So, with AB5 getting so many angry, it’s important to understand why Biden is not winning any hearts at the moment.
A few days ago, Biden tweeted about California passing AB5, smoothing it over with “benefits” including overtime and minimum wage. If he knew anything about the bill, he’d know that the average freelancer couldn’t care less about those “benefits.”
He sees what the gig economy giants trying to do as “unacceptable” in their effort to fight back. As such, he’s urging those in California to “vote no” in November on the initiative.
What? Does he even understand what AB5 is all about? How can he think that this is a good thing? With all of the opposition that this bill has received, most people want to vote yes on the initiative. Plus, if Biden wants people to “vote no,” it can signal that he might like this plan so much that he’d want to push it out across the entire country.
Freelancers have been decimated by the bill. It has destroyed the industry. It could affect thousands of jobs – and tens of thousands more if Biden were to take this to a country-wide practice if he makes it to the White House.
The good news is that this might be a good way to get some more Trump voters for the upcoming election. Many Californians have taken to Twitter to say that they have been a lifelong Democrat but will be voting Republican for the election. #RepealAB5 has become a trending hashtag as people talk about their distaste for the bill and their newfound distaste for Biden.
The tweets talk about how the bill has destroyed the livelihood of countless independent contractors. Hundreds of occupations are affected by this bill, and, yet, Biden is okay with it.
Many Dems are beginning to realize what Republicans have already known: Biden will only be a puppet for the DNC. He will say or do anything that he is told. Why? It’s clear that he doesn’t understand the laws, the impact of the laws, or what the American people really want.
