It’s hard to imagine any US lawmaker or leader not putting their citizens first, especially in a time of such dire need. But all over the nation, governors, mayors, and state representatives are doing just that.
There is no doubt that in this hour, during this pandemic, that Americans all over are in need. Some are lying deathly ill in hospital beds, while others are at a significant risk of losing their livelihoods and businesses. And this is precisely why the federal government has implemented a federal relief bill, known as the CARES Act, that would send checks to individuals, forgivable loans to small businesses, and offers a slew of other benefits to hard-working Americans.
While the bipartisan bill was finally passed in both houses of Congress, it has become very evident in the weeks since it was signed by President Donald Trump that quite a few within those houses are not really happy with the results.
Their primary complaint is that illegal aliens or immigrants will not be receiving any of these benefits.
Can you imagine which end of the spectrum is touting this unfairness? That’s right, the left.
In fact, over the last few weeks, about 49 House Democrats have joined together to support a new Leave No Taxpayer Behind Act that, if passed, would demand that part of the funds of the CARES Act would be redistributed to illegal immigrants within our borders.
Among the loudest of the Democratic voices calling out for illegals rights to be put above yours are those of the freshman ‘Squad.’ Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) from New York, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Ilhan Omar from Minnesota, and Ayanna Presley of Massachusetts all have made statements claiming that illegals should be given the rights as the rest of America.
Tlaib has proposed that everyone in the US should receive $2000 prepaid debit cards, even if, as an illegal, you have only been here three months.
Omar says that even the use of ‘illegal immigrants’ is wrong, stating they are “American taxpayers,” too. And AOC seconds that notion, asking why we are willing to accept their taxes but not give them aid right now.
But progressive city mayors and state governors are taking this even further. Instead of just arguing about it, they are actually making executive orders that would guarantee that ALL residents, including those who are illegal, get access to government funding.
In Chicago, Mayor Lori Lightfoot signed such an order on Tuesday. It would give access to city programs like online education resources for public school students, small business loans, housing assistance, and more to anyone, regardless o their citizenship status.
Lightfoot said in a statement, “Since COVID-19 first reached our city’s doorstep, we have been working around the clock to ensure all our residents are secure and supported, including our immigrant and refugee communities, who are among the most vulnerable to the impact of this pandemic.”
Across the nation, in California, Governor Gavin Newsom has made a similar decree. He has declared that a $50 million micro-lending program is in the works to provide aid to small businesses that don’t qualify for federal funding, like illegal business owners. The state’s legislature is also working on a “Disaster Relief Fund” that would give cash to individuals who can’t benefit from the CARES Act and who may be out of work. It is assumed that the bill will pass, as it is a liberally ran state.
And Minneapolis, Minnesota, where Rep. Omar is from, has already passed a housing assistance program that would give some households as much as $2000, whether or not citizenship is legal.
Now, I am not condemning anyone’s efforts to simply help out those in need. However, as political and government leaders for the United States, it is their priority to help America. And that means Americans first.
We are trying as a country to stay ahead of this virus and support as many as possible. But the economy is being overly stressed at the moment and our resources are limited. We can’t just go around paying everyone thousands of dollars. That is why there are qualifications for the checks for individuals, as well as small business loans.
And if we give those limited resources to people aren’t even supposed to be here legally, that means less for America. Plus, it seems a little counterintuitive to reward people who have broken our laws with federally funded assistance.
