The question over whether Hunter Biden, the son of former Vice President Joe Biden, a candidate for president of the United States, was engaged in corrupt dealings concerning his appointment to the board of Burisma Holdings, a Ukrainian natural gas company, has become heated. The controversy is at the center of the impeachment of President Donald Trump and ongoing efforts to remove him from office.
The president’s defense team related the story, on tape, of how then-Vice President Biden strong-armed the Ukrainians to fire a prosecutor who, incidentally, had been investigating his son Hunter’s ties with Burisma. Hunter was collecting a $50,000 a month paycheck even though he had no experience in the energy industry.
The Washington Examiner related a story of a confrontation between Sen Ted Cruz, R-Texas and an unnamed reporter during a break in the impeachment trial in the Senate. Cruz has become one of the president’s warmest defenders, a development that few would have predicted because of the bad blood that lingered between the two men after the 2016 presidential election.
“The House [impeachment] managers built their entire case on the proposition that investigating Burisma corruption, investigating the Bidens for corruption was baseless and a sham,” Cruz said during a press conference on Monday. “That proposition is absurd … We’ve just seen two hours of evidence.”
As the senate trial winds its way down, the question has arisen over whether witnesses should be called. Democrats would seriously like to talk to John Bolton, Trump’s former National Security Advisor. Republicans are leery of the idea but if it must be they want to interrogate Hunter Biden, something that Democrats oppose. They want the trial to be about the president, not over whether Hunter Biden traded on his father’s position to rake in money he didn’t earn. Evidently, a reporter was of the same frame of mind.
“A reporter pressed Cruz, saying, “But senator, none of the president’s attorneys mentioned one single possible crime. Basically, what they said is [Hunter Biden] got a job, his dad was vice president. I mean, if that’s a crime, shouldn’t half of your children be in prison?”
Cruz, by now a veteran of Washington political combat, could not believe what he had just heard. Cruz has two daughters, one 11 and the other 9, a fact that he hastened to remind the reporter of, adding, “I’m sorry you want to throw a nine-year-old in prison. So, stop playing that nasty Washington game.”
A gentleman would have instantly apologized about the suggestion. Clearly, he did not know the ages of Cruz’s children. However, being a member of the Washington press, the reporter doubled down.
“The reporter responded, “That’s not a nasty Washington game.”
Now Cruz, who must have thought he had fallen down the rabbit hole or perhaps the reporter was just being stupid and rude, responded, “Attacking a nine-year-old?” Then he moved on.
The Daily Wire identified the reporter who wanted to lock up at least one of Cruz’s daughters as Brian Karem, a political analyst for CNN as well as a White House correspondent for Playboy. He has developed a reputation for his aggressive interactions with Trump staffers and supporters.
One incident, related by the Daily Wire, occurred during a social media event at the White House. Karem referred to them as people who were “eager for demonic possession.”
The remark did not sit well with Sebastian Gorka, a former White House staffer, and current radio talk show host. Gorka, laughing, said, “And you’re a journalist, right?”
Things started to take an ugly turn when Karem replied, “Hey, come on over here and talk with me brother, we can go outside and have a long conversation.”
The ever pugnacious Gorka crossed the room, got in Karem’s face, and called him a punk.
By all accounts, Karem thought better of having that “long conversation.”
It resides with Redstate to sum up the back and forth between Karem and Sen. Cruz about locking up elementary school children.
“But to drag Cruz’s children, ages 9 and 11, of all people, into it? So lock up the elementary school children but let Hunter and Joe Biden off the hook? How low can the media go? Who is this character that would have the nerve to ask such a question? And how desperate are the media and Democrats at this point?”
