Rashida Tlaib is a constant disappointment when you look at how a Representative should act. While she likes to point the finger at Trump for his tweets, he has never used profanity. Rashida Tlaib, in her juvenile efforts to be heard, uses profanity on a regular basis. It’s certainly not a great way to show that you’re mature, let alone set a good example for the youth of today of how politics should be working.
Recently, she decided to show off her ignorance on Twitter, sending out a tweet to the Detroit PD, saying that they need to rethink the “whole facial recognition bulls***.” First, she couldn’t even tweet them in a friendly way. She’s a Representative in the state, so it would have been nice if she could have been professional. Children of today have access to social media and follow Representatives. However, she’s proven time and again that she lacks tact and class.
Tlaib has, once again, crudely attacked someone due to her ignorance. She made the comment after promoting that Senator Bernie Sanders is calling for a ban on the technology. Facial recognition software is the future of crime-fighting, which she would know if she bothered to do any research.
This is when the Detroit PD decided to school the Democratic Representative, inviting her to come down to the police department and understand how it is used. They explained that it’s being used to identify criminals who are involved in violent crimes. They also said that “before you criticize,” within the invitation, which was a friendly way of telling her that she needed to be educated.
While Tlaib accepted the invitation, she also asked the PD to review data that, according to her, revealed the flaws within the technology. This part was an insult of its own, assuming that the Detroit Police Department would use technology that is either flawed or that they don’t understand. In response to that, they simply like the tweet rather than responding further.
According to both Sanders and Tlaib, facial recognition software has flaws and unanswered questions. To this, she believes that there should be a ban on the technology until the federal government can address the issues.
The American Civil Liberties Union reported that, after testing the facial recognition technology belonging to Amazon, it identified 30 lawmakers as police suspects. Further, the identify lawmakers were disproportionately colored people.
While the technology has raised a few concerns about false arrests, James Craig, the Detroit chief of police, insisted that the department uses it for “articulable reasonable suspicion” that a suspect has committed a crime.
James Craig also went on to explain that the Detroit Police Department is not in violation of any constitutional rights of citizens. The software is only utilized within the parameters of the law as a way of assisting law enforcement when it comes to criminal activity reports.
Tlaib has the same bad habit that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the other members of “The Squad” have – she makes up facts in order to suit her cause at the moment. She speaks before doing any kind of research. Further, when she speaks, she does so in a condescending way filled with profanity. As a freshman, perhaps she hasn’t learned how to be political or professional. Either way, she has only managed to rub a number of people the wrong way – and there are plenty of Republicans within her district who would love nothing more than to take her seat during the next round of elections.
To speak to a Police Department in such a crude way when they are located in her district is completely ignorant. Further, before pointing the finger at the PD, she needs to understand how the software works. Luckily, the Police Department isn’t going to get ruffled by anything that she says. They are happy to school her in how the software is actually keeping criminals responsible for violent crimes off of the streets.
At no point has the DPD used facial recognition software to spy on people using cameras that are on the streets, in healthcare offices, or anywhere else. They aren’t breaking the Constitution – they are simply looking to keep the streets safer. Considering that Detroit has lower crime rates than ever before, Tlaib should be thanking them rather than telling them to rethink certain “Bulls***.”
When Tlaib gets to the DPD to be schooled, she’ll see that the software is actually making a difference. However, because she thrives on chaos, there will likely be lies on Twitter instead of an apology.
