The last few days have been filled with tension, as President Donald Trump and Democrat Representative Elijah Cummings of Maryland have exchanged words. Cummings is well-known for his dislike for the president and one of many liberals who have called for his impeachment, in addition to throwing the word racist out to describe him.
However, this weekend gives another win to Trump as he turns the tables on the Maryland representative and the media, leaving them between a rock and a hard place.
On Saturday, our president criticized Cummings of the constant aggression and disapproval he has shown to Border Patrol members who have been called to testify before Congress over the last few weeks. Also, he called him out on his leadership abilities and the fact that his district, which includes most of Baltimore, is in worse condition than the southern border.
“Rep. Elijah Cummings has been a brutal bully, shouting and screaming at the great men & women of Border Patrol about conditions at the Southern Border, when actually his Baltimore district is FAR WORSE and more dangerous.” He continued with, “His district is considered the Worst in the USA.”
“As proven last week during a Congressional tour, the Border is clean, efficient, & well run, just very crowded. Cummings District is a disgusting, rat and rodent-infested mess. If he spent more time in Baltimore, maybe he could help clean up this very dangerous and filthy place.”
Trump also suggested that there is some corruption going on in the city because it receives “so much money.”
“Why is so much money sent to Elijah Cummings district when it is considered the worst run and most dangerous anywhere in the United States. No human being would want to live there. Where is all this money going? How much is stolen? Investigate this corrupt mess immediately!”
And of course, Cummings and the media jumped all over Trump, calling his racist for his remarks about the cities high crime rates.
Democrats from all over the nation, as well, responded with tweets denouncing the president and his words about Baltimore, saying it was a beautiful place to live. Bernie Sanders said it was “unbelieve” that our president would “attack American cities.”
However, Trump isn’t the only one to have said such things about Baltimore in recent years. Sanders, for one, should know better. In 2015, when he was visiting there, he described Cummings’ West Baltimore district as a “Third World Country.”
“Anyone who took the walk that we took around this neighborhood would not think you’re in a wealthy nation. You would think that you were in a Third World Country.”
And then again in 2016, Sanders made comments about Baltimore having the “poorest boroughs” and that people living there have “lifespans shorter than people living under a dictatorship in North Korea.”
Trump later commented on this as well, calling out those who condemned him as racist but didn’t say that about Sanders.
“Crazy Bernie Sanders recently equated the City of Baltimore to a THIRD WORLD COUNTRY! Based on that statement, I assume that Bernie must now be labeled a Racist, just as Republican would if he used that term and standard!”
The locals of Baltimore have also stood up to testify that what Trump says about their city is correct. Video after video has been posted on social media sites, proving that the area is entirely run down. Many have even blamed Cummings for the situation, saying things like, “West Baltimore is poorly ran by Democrats,” “it’s time for @RepCummings to Resign,” and “(Cummings) hasn’t done anything for us… He’s worried more about (caring for illegal aliens at the border) than his own people.”
The National Public Safety Partnership has also named Baltimore as a site of “sustained violence that far exceeds the national average.”
Does that mean that all of these people and organizations are racists as well?
The question now is: what the media and Democrats will say in response. Will they backtrack on their own words about Trump being racist or will they call Sanders and anyone else who opposes the Baltimore’s condition racist? Neither will get them anywhere.
After all, the definition of a racist is someone who attacks others based on their race, not what city they live in. Meaning, it is, in fact, possible for a white man to criticize a city and not be racist. Huh, who would have thought?
