Recently, several states, including Georgia, Alabama, Ohio, Arkansas, and Missouri, have passed stricter abortion laws. Obviously, these states’ decision to protect the innocent unborn has made pro-choice advocates furious.
Comparing herself to the Underground Railroad, one pro-abortion mother, grandmother, and hotel owner has even offered free stays and rides to abortion-seeking women.
According to TheBlaze, Shelley O’Brien, who owns the three-story Yale Hotel in Yale, Michigan is opening the doors of her establishment to women who wish to abort their babies. She announced her offer of help on social media.
The Facebook post read, “Dear sisters that live in Alabama, Ohio, Georgia, Arkansas, Missouri, or any of the other states that follow similar laws” limiting abortion. Continuing, Shelley said, “We will support you with several nights lodging and transportation to and from your appointment. The hotel owner added that she would provide this service free of cost.
The Detroit Free Press reported that “O’Brien, who is 55, and a mother of three and grandmother of seven, thought of the Underground Railroad, which was used to lead slaves north to freedom. If a network like that is needed now for women seeking access to abortion, she pledged to be part of that coalition, bringing them to Michigan.”
O’Brien stated, “This is important. This is my line. There’s no coming back from this. You start taking away the right for women to control their own bodies, and we’re done for as a civilization.”
The mother and grandmother also remarked, “I can’t stop what’s happening, but I have the resources to maybe help someone in that position, and especially knowing that women are coming from other states already. My offer extends to anybody that needs help anywhere. It extends to any woman that needs an abortion and this could alleviate the barriers.”
Explaining the justification for her decision, the hotel owner commented, “I have three granddaughters, two great nieces and a lot of other women that I care about, and I don’t want any of them to die in back-alley abortions. And I don’t want any of them to ever have to proceed with a pregnancy if they don’t want to. … People aren’t perfect, and people shouldn’t have to die for their mistakes.”
Apparently, O’Brien, like scores of other pro-choice supporters, don’t consider the unborn babies who are killed during abortion procedures as people.
O’Brien revealed that her offer to abortion-seeking women has garnered tons of attention. Surprisingly, the hotel owner said it’s been mostly positive.
She maintained, “I have had one person call to say that he thought it was wrong. He didn’t have Facebook, but he heard about it and he wanted to let me know that he thought what we are doing is wrong. And I’ve been called a ‘baby killer.’ And it’s like, ‘No, I’m not killing babies in the basement. I am just giving someone a place to stay or maybe a ride.’” T
he mother and grandmother contended that she has yet to be personally confronted about her offer. Reportedly, no one has protested her hotel either.
She insisted, “[T]he only way this is going to change is if people are willing to risk something. The reason [lawmakers] get away with stuff like this is because nobody wants to make waves, nobody wants to give anything up for it.”
The hotel owner stated that her proposal has motivated other women to offer like services, including transportation to abortion appointments, to women who desire it. According to TheBlaze, the mother and grandmother revealed that bookings at her business establishment have increased since she offered her services to women wanting an abortion.
One customer supposedly wrote a message on a receipt that read, “Thank you Yale Hotel for standing up for those affected by current policy.” However, O’Brien maintained that no one has taken her up on her offer yet.
According to the Detroit Free Press, Yale Michigan is “a sleepy little conservative town in the Thumb where bologna is king and where Donald Trump won the 2016 presidential election with nearly 65% of the vote.”
In May of 2019, Michigan’s legislature, controlled by Republicans, passed tougher abortion restrictions. The local media outlet reported that “Lawmakers voted along party lines to ban a second-trimester abortion procedure known as dilation and evacuation. The law includes criminal sentences of two years in prison for doctors who perform the procedures.”
Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer has vowed to veto the legislation. Right to Life of Michigan has promised: “it will initiate a ballot proposal to circumvent a gubernatorial veto and outlaw the procedure.”
