Illegal immigration is a mounting concern for many in the United States of America. President Trump has announced that starting soon he will approve a starting tariff of five percent on Mexican goods coming into the country if the problem at the border is not fixed.
The Mexican President has since sent his foreign relations secretary to meet with the White House.
The tariffs are in place because the southern nation of the United States refuses to help with the illegal crossings at the border.
President Trump has announced that the five percent tariff will rise over time to 25 percent if the problem at the border is not fixed sooner than later.
The President has written that, “Mexico has taken advantage of the United States for decades. Because of the Dems, our Immigration Laws are BAD. Mexico makes a FORTUNE from the U.S., have for decades, they can easily fix this problem. Time for them to finally do what must be done!”
The new tariff is set to take effect on June 10.
The five percent tariff will be placed on all goods that come into the country by land, sea, and air.
By July 1, the tariff will climb to 10 percent. In a statement released earlier this week President Trump stated, “If Mexico still has not taken action to dramatically reduce or eliminate the number of aliens crossing its territory into the United States, Tariffs will be increased to 15 percent on August 1, 2019, to 20 percent on September 1, 2019, and to 25 percent on October 1, 2019. Tariffs will permanently remain at the 25 percent level unless and until Mexico substantially stops the illegal inflow of aliens coming through its territory.”
What this means is that Mexico will need to stronger action at its southern border to keep people from coming through its land.
The nation would also need to take stronger action against drug handlers, bus lines, and other criminal activities. The nation would also need to work with the United States on people claiming asylum for hostile areas.
The Mexican President has reminded President Trump that America is all about immigration and stands as a beacon of hope for people seeking a better life.
However, the people that are coming into the country are not legally seeking access through the right channels. People need to be law abiding people and do things the right way when entering the United States.
There are some people that believe that this measure could harm the USMCA that is currently being negotiated with Canada and Mexico. The current measure limits the number of tariffs that can be placed on certain items. But now this issue causes concern because the tariffs are being used to force a certain level of cooperation from Mexico.
Senator Grassley from Iowa has stated in opposition, “Trade policy and border security are separate issues.
This is a misuse of presidential tariff authority and counters to congressional intent. Following through on this threat would seriously jeopardize passage of USMCA, a central campaign pledge of President Trump’s and what could be a big victory for the country.”
The Senator proposes other ideas such as he dictates, “imposing a fee on the billions of dollars of remittances that annually leave the United States to Mexico.” Grassley has been a major supporter of the President’s immigration efforts but this is one that he is clear he cannot support.
Another Senator from Iowa, Joni Ernst, has stated, “If the president goes through with this, I’m afraid to get this trade agreement across the finish line will be stifled. While I support the need for comprehensive border security and a permanent fix to illegal immigration, this isn’t the right path forward.”
The President does has his supporters of the move and is considering moving forward.
President Trump is tired of the United States of America being taken advantage of by other nations around the world. It is time that someone stands up to those other nations and proclaims that the American people will not stand by and let it happen anymore.
