The borders of the United States have been in the center of elections and politics for decades.
As people from other nations seek to enter the country illegally and are detained by border patrol the debate on how to control it all begins to take shape.
Most of the time the person crossing the border illegally is detained, processed, and eventually sent back home. But things get more complicated when part of the family are American citizens and one person is not.
In some cases, people are fighting to stay in the country on the grounds that part of their family are citizens. So they opt to stay in detention while they fight for their freedoms.
The courts are backlogged with cases and trials so the process can take months and even years to resolve. When this happens the detained immigrant will often choose to leave on their own and seek to come back through legal means.
The amount of immigrants leaving on their own has gone up since the 2016 election. From 2017 to 2018, the number of applications had more than doubled.
President Trump is tying to stop the number of illegal aliens from entering the country. Anyone seeking to enter the United States needs to go through the legal channels and apply for citizenship.
People do not like living in the detention centers for long periods of time. So they are opting to leave to on their own.
It has been a goal of the Trump administration to free up the backlog of immigrant cases and stop the flow of illegals entering the country. In all reality, President Trump can declare a victory on immigration because his goal is becoming a reality.
The numbers from the Justice Department prove this fact in the number of voluntary departures growing each month. People that want to enter the country need to learn to respect the laws and take care of things legally.
Families that have one person in the country illegally are at risk of being split up until they figure out a way to take care of things legally.
Many of the people that leave voluntarily do not have a criminal record except that they are in the country illegally. The concept of self-deport was a measure that introduced by Mitt Romney years ago.
It was an alternative to spending more on immigration and border patrols.
When a person decided they want to leave voluntarily the application they fill out must be approved by an immigration judge.
The number of applicants has grown by 50 percent since 2017 and continues to rise. To date the number of request to leave has outpaced the number of applications.
Under the law leaving on your own request is really a bit of a privilege. Once deportation occurs a person must wait years before every applying to coming into the country legally.
If a person is caught in the country, they can face serious prison time because of the crime.
For the person seeking to leave on their own it is really a last resort because they are leaving the life they have known for a long time. When they leave they really do not have any time frame of when they can return.
The choice to leave also means that they have to pay their own way home and risk high tickets from the airlines.
ICE has been known to look for people that may qualify for voluntary departure because it is easier for them to leave on their own versus having a criminal background.
By them choosing to leave on their own it helps alleviate the already crowded court system.
Brendan Raedy, who is an ICE spokesman, has said, “In addition, voluntary departure generally provides far more time to make necessary arrangements than for those who are ordered removed.”
Attorney Marty Rosenbluth has stated that, “more of his clients from Mexico are considering voluntary departure because of the danger involved in deportation.”
When a person leaves on their own terms they realize that it is safer than being left at the border to find your own way home.
President Trump has to be tough on immigration because it has become a real problem that most do not want to deal with.
