Could You Survive a Natural Disaster?

One of the best ways to survive a natural disaster is to plan ahead.

Make a list and have all priorities in order so that when disaster strikes, it will be heartbreaking, but the chances are less death will sneak up on a person.

Having a plan is not always going to save a person’s life, but the chances are greater, they will live and survive through the disaster and the aftermath.

World famous boxer, Mike Tyson once stated, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.”

This is how a natural disaster strikes, and it sometimes hits us “below the belt.”

Country folk tends to know how to survive because they are used to living off the land.

City folks are thrown into a scenario where they are forced to survive in situations they are not used to living.

Both find discomfort in natural disasters because no one is exempt from the damages.

Planning ahead consist of getting the priorities and affairs in order.

The important stuff is all that matters in making a checklist of what to do.

The basics of survival are water and food.

Having an emergency stash should be at the top of the list because stores may be destroyed, power may be out for days or weeks, and shelves will be empty.

It is crucial to stay stocked up on these supplies.  Bottled water can last for a few years, and non-perishable items will also last a long time.

Household items like toiletries and bathroom supplies should be kept in a bag for emergencies.

Emergency cash should also be put off to the side because credit and debit cards will not get a person through with no electricity.

Valuable papers such as insurance documents, wills, and titles should always be kept organized and together so that they can be grabbed at a moments notice.

It is a good idea to keep these in a safe or file cabinet to help with keeping them together.

Batteries and flashlights should also be on hand.

The power in a natural disaster can be out for a long time, and no one should be left in the dark.

Once the electricity goes out, we are thrown back in time to what seems to be the stone ages for most of us because we are spoiled on the luxuries we know today.

Blankets and clothes should also be kept in a place where they can be easily grabbed to leave in a hurry.

Here in America, we have many natural disasters across the country.

Along the coastlines, we have hurricanes.  On the west coast, there are earthquakes and wildfires.

Recently, Paradise, California had the worst wildfire outbreak it had ever seen.

A resident of Paradise stated, “It looked more like hell.”

The Midland has tornado alley, and up north there are sinkholes and mudslides.

In the Northeast and Northern America during the winter months, we have snow storms and blizzards.

Finally, with the storms that rage across America, no one is safe from flooding.

For some disasters, there are no warnings.

Many get caught off guard even when the proper planning has been in place.

The best way to lessen this is to keep a battery-powered radio to listen to any updates given by authorities or meteorologist.

Most times, we are not caught off guard because of the technology we have to forewarn us of upcoming events.

Evacuation routes should also be planned ahead.

One of the worst hurricanes in history was in 1900 and hit Galveston, Texas with such force it wiped out everything and took out over 8,000 people.

Back then, technology was not there to force an evacuation.

So many people were caught off guard and lost their lives by a massive category 4 hurricane.

Even today, when authorities tell people to evacuate, there are some who stay and ride out the storms only to find they made a huge mistake.

When these disasters hit, no rescue team will come out to save anyone until the danger passes.

Evacuation routes were implemented after the hurricane of 1900 so that people could pack up and leave.

If all these suggestions are followed, then there should be no problems in surviving a natural disaster.

All the information is always passed from authorities to the public when the warnings are handed out.

People should heed the warnings given, and always plan ahead because we never know when we can be put in these horrible situations.
