“Unpatriotic” is not a label often used to describe those who campaign and ascend to some of the highest offices in the land, but President Donald Trump called one freshman representative just that this week.
Speaking about controversial senator Ilhan Omar, who has already made headlines for her derisive statements about Israel and Judaism, the president used harsh terms to describe her lack of patriotism and support for the nation.
Omar already made waves after comments she made about the September 11 terror attacks on the nation, downplaying the devastation and stating simply “something happened”.
This lack of interest in one of the most tragic attacks on the United States in a century led to significant push-back from all quarters – including colleagues from the representative from Minnesota’s own party.
What Was Actually Said?
Omar was presenting a speech to the Council of American-Islamic Relations last month and included the topic of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, which she dismissed with “some people did something”.
Backlash from Republicans and the press was almost immediate and even the Democratic party spoke out about the dismissive way the representative discussed the tragedy.
The New York Post joined the President and key politicians and publications in denouncing Oman’s remarks and chastising her for her lack of respect for this relatively recent tragedy.
President Trump Responds
After hearing her statements and responses, President Trump took to Twitter to call her out for her distinctly disrespectful and “extremely unpatriotic” behavior.
He also shared a video that harshly criticizes Omar for her stance on this national tragedy – that befell the nation and people she is sworn to serve.
The video features actual 9-11 footage of Americans in peril, inter-cut with Omar’s disinterested remarks.
The video was widely shared and Omar’s statements made a shocking commentary when played alongside the sacrifices and losses everyday citizens and first responders made that day.
Speaking to KSTP, a local Minnesota television station, President Trump revealed he has no regrets about calling out the freshman senator and holding her responsible for her actions.
He also cited her noted anti-Semitism, something her own party has attempted to distance themselves from.
No Regrets from President Trump
When asked if he regrets sharing the video that directly criticizes Omar, President Trump had this to say:
“No, not at all,” Trump said to local television station KSTP in Minnesota on Monday. “Look, she’s been very disrespectful to this country. She’s been very disrespectful, frankly, to Israel. She is somebody that doesn’t really understand, I think life, real life, what it’s all about.”
He continued, sharing his opinion and concern about the impact Omar would have on the state of Minnesota and the nation itself:
“It’s unfortunate. She’s got a way about her that’s very, very bad I think for our country. I think she’s extremely unpatriotic and extremely disrespectful to our country,”
Omar was quick to respond to criticism, not apologizing for minimizing a monumental loss of life and tragedy, but to complain that Trump was causing others to target her. According to Omar,
“Since the President’s tweet Friday evening, I have experienced an increase in direct threats on my life — many directly referencing or replying to the President’s video”.
Omar’s primary concern was her own feeling of security and her own political viewpoints, not the feelings of others.
She called for support — and received some, mainly from members of her own local party and progressive groups in various pockets across the nation.
The representative did not apologize or back down from her original stance, despite being called out on magazine covers, by regular citizens on Twitter and by leaders from her own party.
This is not the first time that Omar has launched attacks against American citizens or behaved in a clearly unpatriotic way. In the few months that she has been in office, she has repeatedly spoken out against Israel and against America for the ongoing friendship and support between the two nations.
Her recent comments and official statements have been seen by many as troubling and outright anti-Semitic.
Omar has yet to dial back on the anti-Semitic rhetoric and continues to malign the hard working citizenry she claims to support.
